NBA Scotland's new Council astonished
that handover of bank accounts and
other records has not been made.

According to a recent press statement from the National Beef Association (NBA)(1), the NBA's new office holders in Scotland have still to be sent cheque books, original bank statements, accounts and other documentation previously held by individuals now representing the Scottish Beef Cattle Association – even though the NBA's old Scottish Council was formally disbanded at a well reported EGM at Hexham, Northumberland on May 24th, 2006.

The statement goes on to say that a number of requests for a handover have been made to the NBA's former Scottish chairman, Pat Lambert, and its former secretary, Natalie Cormack, but so far no move has been made.

At a meeting held on 31st August in Perth the new NBA Scotland chairman, Iain Mathers , told its interim Council that Ms Cormack had used NBA notepaper to tell the Association on August 18th that the former NBA officeholders who continued to be signatories of its two Scottish accounts wanted one in particular to remain open and continue to be administered by herself.

Mr Mathers said

“That account is fed by standing orders from some NBA members in Scotland so it is no surprise that the Association's new representatives in Scotland, who are now responsible for the administration of members' funds, were horrified with Ms Cormack's suggested arrangement.”

“They pointed out too that the documentation, including minute books, that had still to be handed over was the property of the NBA and it would be impossible to prepare properly for an AGM later this year until all the records had been transferred correctly.”

“NBA Scotland was also astonished by Ms Cormack's suggestion that the signatures on the account could be changed immediately if former NBA national vice-chairman, Keith Redpath , was paid £4,850 which was said to be outstanding, and that she had instructed the Bank of Scotland to close a second account.”

“Unfortunately it will be impossible for the NBA's new Scottish Council to examine the accounts managed by former office holders until they have possession of the relevant records.”

“It is aware that Redpath Farms has already received substantial sums of money from the NBA in Scotland and needs to examine these transactions. However, if after the accounts are audited and some monies are found still to be due, it has said they will be paid in full.”

At the same meeting the interim Council of NBA Scotland agreed to continue to represent the Association until an AGM is called and formal elections by the membership can take place.

The current interim Committee of NBA Scotland is:

Iain Mathers , Inverurie , (chairman);
Hamish McBean , Nairn (vice-chairman);
Judith Hutchison, Moffat (treasurer);
Graham Brown, Brechin;
James Irvine, Comrie;
David Ismail, Glenfarg;
Mike Martin, Muir of Ord;
George McFadzean, Crieff;
Neil McCorkindale, Oban;
Tom Millar, Ingford;
Robert Newlands, Forres;
Rognvald Sinclair, Orkney;
Douglas Stewart, Earlston;
Marion Tilson, Gordon.

Kim Haywood of Edinburgh is secretary.

It is understood that NBA Scotland will shortly be producing a newsletter describing what it has been doing since its new committee was formed, and what is planned for the future.

With a much improved organisation in Scotland, with the NBA HQ now relatively nearby at Hexham, with increased representation on the NBA Board, and with concentrating on issues that are important to the beef industry in Scotland in stead of internal arguments, the contribution of NBA Scotland to the Scottish beef industry can confidently be predicted to be substantial.
