SEERAD announcement of
Land Management Contracts

Editorial

Further to the Land-Care article entitled "Land Management Contracts - a joke if they were not so sad" (1), the Scottish Environment and Rural Affairs Department (SEERAD) has now announced the terms of these contracts with their 17 choices (2).

We see no reason for changing the title of our initial article on the subject. Land-Care intends to comment further on the information that has now become more fully available in a future article.

Far from heralding a new and prosperous Scottish farming industry trumpeted by Ross Finnie, the Minister responsible, the opportunities provided by the LMCs are profoundly disappointing. Indeed, questions need to be asked as to how the content of such a potentially useful scheme - at least to try and salvage in part the damage done by decoupling so profoundly from production - came about.
