How come that the top civil servant at the Scottish Office and then to the Scottish Executive, who allegedly was involved in a major way with the massive financial cock-up over the building of the Scottish Parliament, becomes the Vice-Chancellor of Glasgow University? It wouldn't have anything to do with contacts would it?

And how come that a non-scientist, but who happens to be a Vice Chancellor of a senior university in Scotland highly dependent on government funding, comes to be chosen as an 'independent' chairman of the inquiry, reportedly paid for by the UEA, into what has been described as the UEA Climategate email scandal?

Perhaps we need a modern-day William Schwenk Gilbert to write a libretto for a modern-day Sir Arthur Sullivan on the theme 'The bigger the cock-up the higher the accolade.' There are lots of examples to choose from.

If Sir Muir manages to get the government off the hook on this one, surely a peerage is a must.
