Results of Oban Times Poll on Land Reform
(Filed 24/02/03)

The Oban Times (www.obantimes.co.uk)
ran an opinion poll on Land Reform between 31st January and 14th
February, 2003.
The question asked was:
Is the Scottish Land Reform Bill Fair?
There were 55 votes cast
55% voted Yes
45% voted No
The Oban Times does not claim that this is in
anyway a scientific poll. However, within the readership of the
Oban Times it does illustrate that there is a wide dichotomy of
view.
In terms of law making, it would surely be unwise
to try and make a law work if a larger poll confirmed that a substantial
proportion of the population thought the law to be unjust.
Assessing what the public actually thinks of the
Bill is particularly difficult as the Bill mixes Property Rights
and Access in one and the same pot.
Also, in terms of Access the promoters of the
Bill have pushed the Bill through the Scottish Parliament on a political
basis before they have agreed even among themselves what an Access
Code should say.
What an extraordinary Bill, and what an extraordinary
way to create new law.
Scotland used to be famous for its fairness in
matters to do with the law - is this another standard that apparently
has gone to the wind?
