Cattle at Cultybraggan Farm

Part of the closed herd grazing adjacent to Cultybraggan Farm steading. The cattle are Aberdeen Angus (AA) and Limousin (LIMR) crosses, but also include a nucleus of pedigree animals of both breeds. The farm does not keep any black limousin pedigree cattle - red is the characteristic coat colour for the limosuin breed, while black is the characteristic coat colour for the Aberdeen Angus breed. In my view the deliberate breeding of black pedigree limousin cattle is to be deprecated as it needlessly obfuscates the respective breed characteristics.

In late October with the grass becoming scarce, the cattle have access through to the stubble field beyond where additional feeding (such as silage) can be supplied as necessary. The red limousin calf in the right foreground shows good conformation.

A typical batch of bullocks at Cultybraggan, showing their general uniformity of conformation and of coat colour (either red or black). AA crosses and Limousin crosses can be either black or red.
