Ultrasound Scanning of Ewes

The first batch of 215 gimmers/ewes - those put to the ram on 30th October 2002 - were ultrasound scanned for pregnancy diagnosis:

  • 26 had triplets
  • 139 had twins
  • 39 had singles
  • 9 yeld - i.e. not in lamb

This gives a lambing percentage at this stage of 184% in this group.

As this group contained all the gimmers (70), in which when lambing percentages are not expected to be high, these figures are satisfactory.

The gimmers and ewes are Scotch Mules (product of Bluefaced Leicester Tups on Blackface ewes). Gimmers are one and a half year old female sheep put to the tup for the first time.

The tups put to our Scotch Mules were Suffolks - See 13 September 2002

All the Suffolk tups used for this first batch had grade 1 scrapie resistance genotype - See 22 November 2002
