Warmwell apologies for comments re LEAF conference (16th Oct 2002)

www.warmwell.com states

‘With reference to the LEAF conference referred to here last week. We hear from a most respected source that -

"LEAF is a highly respectable organisation concerned with Integrated Farm Management - integrating farming and the environment. The speakers were not apologists for GM. Two of the speakers were amongst the most distinguished scientists in the country - Prof Trewavas of Edinburgh University and Prof Hillman of SCRI. They have not dedicated their lives for the benefit of GM or industrial companies...No one at the LEAF conference talked about growing GM crops on their farms or taking part in any trials. It was not the main issue of the conference."

We very much regret that anyone should have been offended by our remarks about Professor Trawavas' arguments. Our correspondent added,

"I am neither for or against GM crops until such rational debate has had a chance to take place. The contributions of Prof Trewavas and Prof Hillman contributed significantly to that debate, but the conference was not just about GM crops - far from it. A rational debate is also required over organic farming in terms of the scientific evidence of its benefits and disadvantages, compared to other forms of farming."

This seems absolutely correct to us. Rational debate must be allowed to take place on both issues.’
