PEOPLE TOO launch their WEBSITE - www.peopletoo.org - aimed at
defending local democracy from centralisd bureaucrazy in rural Scotland
People the Forgotten Species was the
brainchild of Kirsty Macleod. A very successful meeting was held
under this title in the Dewars Centre, Perth, Scotland on 12th October
2001. Some 180 delagates attended from all over Scotalnd for a full
days programme of papers and discussions all centred around
concern for people living and working in rural areas and what is
happening to them. Indeed there were more delagates at Kirstys
conference than there were at the Annual Conference of SNH held
at Battleby or the Annual Conference of the Scottish Landowners
Federation that year. The standard of the papers and the level of
disucssion at People the Forgotten Species was far more
interesting, enlightened and lively than in the case of the other
two conferences just mentioned. The reason why this was the case
was because there was a lack of confidence in either of these two
formal organisations regarding their competence and effectivness
in addressing the concerns of those who were trying to make a living
by working the land and surrounding waters in rural areas. There
was also resentement among those who have traditionally worked and
cared for the land and who are now being increasing dominated by
a central bureacrazy, too often with little practical experience
and much pseudo or frankly erroneous (or misapplied) science.
Following the success of the Perth conference
People the Forgotten Species got itself formally constituted
into People Too. It now has its own website (www.peopletoo.org),
together with its satirical cousin www.freshair.uk.net.
Land-Care congratulates People Too and recommends that
readers support their websites to the full. They are sure to provide
interesting and informative reading.
The inaugural page of www.peopletoo.org is reproduced
