Who’s Next for the Chop

Pat Blunsden, Small Paws Cattery, Seil, by Oban.

Oban Times, Letters
16 January 2003

Sir,

Rescue groups know far more about relocating hedgehogs than Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) does. They do it all the time.

SNH states that it has carried out a ‘scientific study’. In my opinion scientific studies are always biased towards the aims of those carrying out that study.

This cull wasn’t a ‘hard decision’ for SNH to make. They went into the meeting with their minds already made up as to the action they would take.

Many rescue groups were either represented at that meeting or had made their suggestions known. It was all disregarded as ‘Big Brother knows best’.

The birds are all that matters, it seems.

What happens if the waders continue to decline once the hedgehogs have gone? Who’s next for the chop?
